Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua to Isle de Ometepe, Nicaragua

Good morning all!

Apologies for the delay, but we have been travelling a lot over the past few days with no Internet access.

So where did we leave you last time... ah yes... We stayed at Apoyo, crater lake, for two nights. It was a much needed rest, swimming, eating and drinking whilst taking in the amazing views and wildlife.

From here we travelled just 30 minutes to the nearest town, Granada where we stayed for just one night. Granada is a busy little town full of beautiful architecture, whilst there we wandered the streets and sampled the local cuisine....

From Granada we spent a morning travelling south towards Nicaragua's famed Isla de Ometepe, an island formed of two huge volcanoes.

After originally planning to stay for 2 nights, we ended up staying 4 and thoroughly enjoyed the island life pace. While here we explored the island and on the first day hopped on a bus to the Charco Verde nature reserve where we enjoyed amazing views of the volcanoes and the lake....

Nick and Marie wandered round the island with us after we (of course!) bumped into them at a bar...

The next day Rachel climbed the bigger of the two volcanoes, the active one la Conception, with Nick and Marie. I was originally booked onto the trip but was feeling a little under the weather, so spent the day at our hostel in a hammock! It was a difficult climb and we only went to the lookout point (3hrs up!)...   Lost a lot of water but replaced it with water and beer ;-)

On our final day on Ometepe we took a bus down to the springs and spent the afternoon swimming and drink locococo! Rum and coconut milk from a coconut....

On Monday we had an epic day of travelling. We were aiming to get to El Castillo, a small town along the San Juan river, but to get there we had to take a 12 hour overnight boat from Ometepe! And that is where we will leave you.... Until next time...

The weeks highlights:

Best view: Watching a family of howler monkeys, including two babies, clambering around in tree just feet away from us, while walking around Apoyo.

Best food: Amazing sandwiches and coffee in The Garden Cafe, Granada. Avocado and hummus and BLT with avocado, really fresh and tasty! Local tostadas and quesillas in a family run restaurant in Granada.

Weirdest journey: Getting on a bus on Ometepe at 9.30am with Nick and Marie and being talked at by a local drunk who called himself The Fox and who's favourite pass time was to guess everyone's age....

Love Monday Funday: As touched on above we spent a lot of time travelling on Monday. The very beginning of our 12 hour boat ride did not go well as the water was very choppy (who'd have thought that a lake would have such big waves?!) and made both of us feel very sick. But we ended our Monday sitting out on top deck looking out into the darkness at the horizon (this helped with the sea sickness) huddled together with the wind on our faces and the stars and the moon shining all around us, an amazing love Monday Funday afterall :-)
